About Aminophylin Injection

AMINOPHYLLINE belongs to the class of drugs called bronchodilators primarily used to relieve symptoms of restrictive airways problems due to asthma, chronic obstructive respiratory disease (COPD) and other chronic lung diseases like bronchitis and emphysema (damaged air sacs with shortness of breath). It also used to treat sleep apnea in preterm infants. Asthma is a chronic (long-term) respiratory condition in which airways narrow, swell and produce extra mucus, leading to difficulty in breathing. COPD is a group of lung diseases with emphysema (shortness of breath) and chronic bronchitis (inflammation of the lining of bronchial tubes).

Medicinal Benefits of Aminophylin Injection

AMINOPHYLLINE contains Aminophylline is a bronchodilator that is used to treat symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD). It works by relaxing muscles and widening the airways of the lungs. Additionally, AMINOPHYLLINE helps thin and loosen phlegm (mucus) in the lungs, windpipe and nose. Thereby, it helps to cough out easily and makes breathing easier by opening airways. AMINOPHYLLINE helps to prevent an asthma attack and exercise freely if it is taken before exercise. It is also used to prevent apnea (temporary cessation of breathing, especially during sleep) in preterm infants.

Directions for Use

Oral tablet: Use AMINOPHYLLINE as prescribed by your doctor. Take AMINOPHYLLINE with food to avoid stomach upset and swallow the whole tablet with a glass of water. Do not break, crush or chew it. Oral solution: Shake the bottle well before use. Check the label for directions and take AMINOPHYLLINE in doses as prescribed by your doctor with the help of a measuring cup. Injection: Injection will be administered by a healthcare professional. Do not self-administer.

Drug Warnings

If you are allergic to AMINOPHYLLINE or any other medicines, please tell your doctor.  If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is advised to inform your doctor before using AMINOPHYLLINE. Regular monitoring of potassium levels is recommended while taking AMINOPHYLLINE as it may cause low potassium levels in the blood. If your breathing worsens or you often wake up at night with asthma, experience chest tightness in the morning or last longer than usual, please consult a doctor immediately. These might be signs indicating that your asthma is not controlled properly and requires an alternate or additional treatment. Do not take AMINOPHYLLINE if you have a heart rhythm disorder that causes fast heartbeats.

Drug-Drug Interaction:

AMINOPHYLLINE may interact with medicines for heartburn or an ulcer (cimetidine), antibiotics (erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, rifampicin, clarithromycin, norfloxacin), medicines for gout (allopurinol, sulphinpyrazone), medicines for high blood pressure or chest pain (diltiazem, propranolol, verapamil, propafenone, mexiletine), antidepressants (fluvoxamine),  medicines for epilepsy or fits (phenytoin, carbamazepine, primidone, phenobarbital), water pills (furosemide), medicines used heart-related medicines (isoprenaline, digoxin, adenosine), anthelmintic (thiabendazole),  corticosteroids (prednisone) and oral contraceptives (ethinylestradiol), anaesthetics (ketamine or halothane), antimanic agents (lithium), anticancer (aminoglutethimide, interferon alfa, methotrexate),  medicines used to treat asthma (zafirlukast, theophylline), a medicine used to reduce the risk of stroke (ticlopidine).
