Didanosine is used for treating infections caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It is used in combination with other medicines to restrict the development of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Didanosine is an antiviral medication. It prevents the multiplication of viruses in human cells. This stops the virus from producing new viruses and clears up your infection.

Directions for Use

• In combination with other medicines, it is used for the treatment of HIV infections.
• Take it with food, as this increases the absorption of the medicine into the body.
• Didanosine may cause dizziness or sleepiness. Do not drive or do anything requiring concentration until you know how it affects you.
• You may still develop infections or other illnesses associated with viral infection while taking this medication.
• You can also pass on HIV or HBV to others. Don't share needles or personal items that can have blood or body fluids on them.
• During treatment and for at least six months after stopping this medicine, regular blood tests are needed to monitor your liver function, level of hepatitis B virus, and blood cells in your blood.

Drug Warnings

Do not take didanosine together with allopurinol, ribavirin, or stavudine.

You may develop lactic acidosis, a dangerous build-up of lactic acid in your blood. Call your doctor or get emergency medical help if you have unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain, dizziness, feeling cold, or feeling very weak or tired.

didanosine can also cause severe or life-threatening effects on your liver or pancreas. Call your doctor at once if you have: severe pain in your upper stomach (which may spread to your back), nausea and vomiting, fast heart rate, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

PREGNANCY

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, and use your medications properly to control your infection. HIV can be passed to your baby if the virus is not controlled during pregnancy. Your name may be listed on a registry to track any effects of antiviral medicine on the baby.

If you are pregnant, do not take didanosine together with stavudine. This combination can be very dangerous during pregnancy.

BREAST FEEDING

Women with HIV or AIDS should not breastfeed a baby. Even if your baby is born without HIV, the virus may be passed to the baby in your breast milk.

DRIVING

Please consult a doctor before driving with Didanosine.

LIVER

Let your doctor know if you have any history of liver diseases before taking Didanosine.

KIDNEY

Let your doctor know if you have any history of kidney diseases before taking Didanosine.
